French words in English you should know. Bonjour

COMMON FRENCH WORDS IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
1. À gogo: In abundance. In French this is colloquial.
2. À la carte: lit. "on the menu"; In restaurants it refers to ordering individual dishes rather than a fixed-price meal.

5. Acquis communautaire: Used in European Union law to refer to the total body of EU law accumulated thus far.
6. Adieu: lit. "to God"; farewell; it carries more weight than au revoir ("goodbye," literally "until re-seeing"). It is definitive, implying you will never see the other person again. Depending on the context, misuse of this term can be considered as an insult, as one may wish for the other person's death or say that you do not wish to see the other person ever again while alive. It is used for au revoir in the south of France and to denote a deprivation from someone or something.
7. Aide-mémoire: lit. "memory aid"; an object or memorandum to assist in remembrance, or a diplomatic paper proposing the major points of discussion.

12. Apéritif or aperitif: lit. "[drink] opening the appetite", a before-meal drink.[3] In colloquial French, un apéritif is usually shortened to un apéro.
13. Appetence: 1. A natural craving or desire 2. An attraction or affinity; From French word "Appétence", derived from "Appétit" (Appetite).
14. Après moi, le deluge: lit. "After me, the deluge", a remark attributed to Louis XV of France in reference to the impending end of a functioning French monarchy and predicting the French Revolution. It is derived from Madame de Pompadour's après nous, le déluge, "after us, the deluge". The Royal Air Force No. 617 Squadron, famously known as the "Dambusters", uses this as its motto.
15. Arête: A narrow ridge. In French, also fishbone; edge of a polyhedron or graph; bridge of the nose.

24. Au pair: A young foreigner who does domestic chores in exchange for room and board. In France, those chores are mainly child care/education.
25. Au revoir!: "See you later!" In French a contraction of Au plaisir de vous revoir (to the pleasure of seeing you again).
26. Avant-garde (pl. avant-gardes): applied to cutting-edge or radically innovative movements in art, music and literature; figuratively "on the edge," literally, a military term, meaning "vanguard" (which is a corruption of avant-garde) or "advance guard," in other words, "first to attack" (antonym of arrière-garde).
27. Avant la letter: Used to describe something or someone seen as a forerunner of something (such as an artistic or political movement) before that something was recognized and named, e.g., "a post-modernist avant la lettre," "a feminist avant la lettre." The expression literally means before the letter, i.e., "before it had a name." The French modern form of this expression is "avant l'heure".

28. Avoirdupois: Used in Middle English, avoir de pois = commodities sold by weight, alteration of Old French aveir de peis = goods of weight.

Why is Valentine's Day celebrated. Who was Valentine/ Velentino?

St Valentine's Day has roots in several different legends that have found their way to us through the ages. One of the earliest popular symbols of the Valentine's day is Cupid, the Roman god of love, who is represented by the image of a young boy with bow and arrow. Several theories surround the history of Valentine's Day.
Was There a Real Valentine?

Three hundred years after the death of Jesus Christ, the Roman emperors still demanded that everyone believe in the Roman gods. Valentine, a Christian priest, had been thrown in prison for his teachings. On February 14, Valentine was beheaded, not only because he was a Christian, but also because he had performed a miracle. He supposedly cured the jailer's daughter of her blindness. The night before he was executed, he wrote the jailer's daughter a farewell letter, signing it "From Your Valentine." Another legend tells us that this same Valentine, well-loved by all, received notes to his jail cell from children and friends who missed him.
Bishop Valentine?

Another Valentine was an Italian bishop who lived at about the same time, AD 200. He was imprisoned because he secretly married couples, contrary to the laws of the Roman emperor. Some legends say he was burned at the stake.
Feast of Lupercalia

The ancient Romans celebrated the feast of Lupercalia, a spring festival, on the 15th of February, held in honor of a goddess. Young men randomly chose the name of a young girl to escort to the festivities. With the introduction of Christianity, the holiday moved to the 14th of February. The Christians had come to celebrate February 14 as the saint day that celebrated the several early Christian martyrs named Valentine.
Choosing a Sweetheart on Valentine's Day

The custom of choosing a sweetheart on this date spread through Europe in the Middle Ages, and then to the early American colonies. Throughout the ages, people also believed that birds picked their mates on February 14!
In AD 496 Sain Pope Gelasius I declared February 14 as "Valentine's Day". Although it's not an official holiday, most Americans observe this day.

Whatever the odd mixture of origins, St Valentine's Day is now a day for sweethearts. It is the day that you show your friend or loved one that you care. You can send candy to someone you think is special. Or you can send roses, the flower of love. Most people send "valentine" a greeting card named after the notes that St Valentine received in jail.

How to clear GRE? What is GRE? Entrance test for the USA colleges or universities, scholarship, etc. All you need to know about the GRE

Google image

What is GRE?
Students planning to pursue Masters of Science, commonly known as MS, take the GRE -Graduate Record Examination to get admission in one of the foreign universities. Do not let your struggle go wasted by not being able to deliver your best on the exam day. The GRE is one such exam which is important to take admission in Post Graduate programmes.
Who all are eligible for GRE?
This information is primarily meant for engineering graduates. If you have decided to do an M.S. after your B.E., and for all those who want to pursue Masters programme according to their respective courses. This exam is gateway to many foreign universities. This exam is to check your verbal and quantitative skills.
How to clear GRE?
Graduate record examination (GRE is an exam) is an exam conducted globally by the Educational testing service (ETS), the world’s largest private non-profitable organization which conducts assessment test worldwide for admission in various institutes across the USA and some other English speaking countries like the UK, Canada, Australia and others. GRE is a standard test score accepted by many universities for graduate level course since 1949.
Exam is conducted in two ways:
1. General Test: The General Test takes into account verbal reasoning, quantitative ability, and analytically writing skills. Almost all the universities accept the General test score and usually everyone opts for this test. It takes place round the year and you can choose your date according to your convenience.
2. Subject Test: The Subject Test assesses the achievement in a particular subject area or extensive background in that discipline. These tests are in the following areas: Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Literature (English), Physics and Psychology. It is conducted on a fixed date for everyone, more on the terms of an entrance exam. Mostly no engineer goes for this.
The exam is conducted in a place where there is no scope to conduct an online test. It purely depends upon the talent you exhibit that decides your success, because this test is unbiased. You may hail from any educational background but all that is put to test here is your general IQ.

REQUIREMENTS:
Some basic requirements are needed in order to take the exam.
Passport–Passport serves as a means of identification to gain admission to your test centre and your dream country. Well, if you don’t have a passport then apply for it as soon as possible, as you cannot appear for the GRE without it, but remember you can register your exam without it.
Registration–Register for the GRE in advance to be assured of obtaining your preferred testing date.
Preparation–Check out the study material and prepare well for the exam.

Some steps will help you to clear GRE
GRE has 2 sections i.e.
Each section is considered as one stage. First Section is Stage 1 (or called as Routing Stage). Depending on your performance, the test taker is routed to one of several alternative second-stage tests, each of which consists of a fixed set of questions and differs on average difficulty.
Quantitative Section:
The Quantitative section comprises of multiple choice questions covering quantitative comparison, problem solving questions with a focus on basic concepts of arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis. There will be exactly 28 questions for which you will be allocated 45 minutes. The scores will be evaluated on a 200-800 scale with 10 point increments.
The approximate time you get to solve a question will be around a minute and-a-half.
The revised GRE also consists of multiple choice questions probably with both ‘select one choice’ and also ‘select one or more choices’ kind of questions. The paper is divided into two sections. There will appear a total approximate 40 questions in both the sections added together and the time allocated will be 70 minutes. So here, each section with approximately 20 questions will be allocated 35 minutes.
The approximate time you get to solve a question will be less than a minute and-a-half.
Hence, this calls for more attention, speed and accuracy. The scores here will be evaluated on a 130-170 scale with 1 point increments. The ETS has also mentioned that some changes pertaining to the test takers’ perspective have been made. The new revised test comes with a new preview and review capabilities. There will also be a new feature “Mark and Review” to tag questions so that you can skip them and return back to them. For this section especially, there will be an on-screen calculator provided to do basic calculating options which shows that there will be more stress on reasoning capability of the test taker rather than on cumbersome calculations.
Whatever may the exam pattern be, the syllabus will remain unchanged. All the basic fundamental mathematics until your high school, general reasoning ability must all be taken care of for you to confidently attempt this section with finesse.
Verbal Reasoning Section:
The verbal reasoning section in the GRE general test aims at measuring the reading skills, analogical reasoning skills, and also vocabulary proficiency in the English language of the test taker. In here, you will be asked questions in relation to analogies, sentence completion, reading comprehension and antonyms. There will be 30 questions to be attempted in 30 minutes. The scores will be evaluated on 200-800 scale with 10 point increments.
The time you get for each question is exactly one minute.
The revised GRE verbal section has quite a few changes, both paper pattern wise and also syllabus wise. The analogies and antonyms are totally removed in the revised format. Text completion questions, sentence equivalence questions are to replace the analogies and antonyms. The verbal section has two sub sections carrying approximately 20 questions each and is totally allocated 60 minutes for both the sub sections collectively. The scores here will be evaluated on 130-170 scale with 1 point increments.
The time you get here is a minute and-a-half for each question.
This must not be a sign of relief since you are snatched of comparatively easy questions such as analogies and antonyms. The questions which appear might be time consuming and misleading, so you must take utmost care while preparation and while taking the test. The new features you get here are highlighting a sentence on screen for emphasis during answering passage questions.
Analytical Writing Section:
This section targets the test taker’s ability to analyze, judge and evaluate any particular issue and present it in his own words thus also testing your writing skills. In this section there are two tasks to be answered. They are:
•         Analyze an Issue task.
•         Analyze an Argument task.
In the GRE general test, you will be given 45 minutes to the former and 30 minutes to the latter respectively. But in the revised test format, both the tasks are given 30 minutes. This clears that it requires you to be fast in analyzing an issue and present it in the best convincing way. There has been another change in regards to this section. Earlier, there were two topics given in the ‘Analyze an Issue Task’. But in the revised pattern, there will be given no choice of that sort. The scoring is evaluated on 0-6 scale with 0.5 point increments.

Make your strategy:
Always make sure that before moving to next question, the previous question has to be attempted. An attempt would mean that you click any of the available options from the choice and confirms the same before moving to next question. Once a question is attempted, you can not revert to it. So be sure about the question you attempt.
GRE exam is adaptive in nature. The first question you attempt in the GRE exam will be off average difficulty. Half the people attempting the GRE get it right, which is generally indicates that it is fairly simple.
If you click on the correct option, the next question on your screen will be bit more difficult. If you answer the first question of the exam wrong the next question will be easier. Once you attempt 7 to 10 questions, the computer fixes a difficulty level for you depending upon your answer in the previous questions. If you attempt more tough questions, your chances of getting high score will increase accordingly. The first question carries the maximum marks, followed closely by the second and then so on.
The first seven to ten questions are very important and decisive. Your section score in GRE will be decided by your performance in these questions. Therefore, take time to crack the first 7-10 questions, even if you miss out on five questions at the end. A good performance in the initial questions will help you to score well in the exam and increase the chances to score
Examples:
1. You get acquainted section first. You solve all the questions which will be a mixture of easy, moderate and difficult. Assuming you did really well, your next section, say Verbal, will be more difficult. If you perform badly, your next section will again be easy.
2. Moderately difficult level of questions will be given to you in Section 1. Based on your performance, you will get one of Easy, Moderate and Difficult in section 2.
•         Score 165 in Section 1 then you will be routed to Difficult Level in Section 2.
•         If you score 135 then you will be routed to Easy Stage 2.
Another variation can be
•         Stage 1: Moderately Difficult
•         Stage 2: Very Easy, Easy, Moderate, Difficult and Very Difficult

IMPORTANT NOTES:
Myth :
You should solve the first few questions (the first 8-9 questions) taking as much time as required and get them right. This is not true. It depends on the level of questions. You should not blindly follow this logic and lose too much time so that you do not have enough time in the end to solve the remaining questions which may turn out to be easier. It's “suicide”.

Must do:
You SHOULD attempt all the questions even though you might have to mark an answer without spending enough time on it because an incomplete paper can cost you a loss of significant points.
PREPARATION AND SUCCESS:
You can get vast material over the internet or there are many institutes which provide coaching. The official GRE website provides you with genuine updates and information about the test. The colleges which consider GRE score and any additional information you might need will also be provided. Knowing all about this exam must follow with a serious dedication on your part. All that you will ever want to know about the exam is at your hands and the rest must lie within you. Hard work, commitment, and time management will get you to live your dream!
Good luck!

How to be a bodybuilder. How to make/ build muscles. How to remain tension free even in today's era. Is your life on the right track? Are you fit enough? Are you old and still want fitness?

How to keep yourself fit in this era. Must read.

Are you fit enough for your life, family or office?

My passion for fitness

As I entered my office today evening, I met a senior colleague, who is in her 70s, a native American, Mrs Dona. As I was about to shake hands with her as usual, she declined and said her hands were dirty as she had just changed a tyre of her car. I was surprised at that because I have never seen any Indian girl here working like this. I know many girls, my students and friends, who have always asked for some help from others for such a work. Does it mean that they can't? or they don't have enough strength whereas that white old lady did. Where is women empowerment in India then?
She came to India around 45 years ago and settled here. I must say that she is the most active person at my office.

Once there was a saying 'Health is Wealth'. But now, people think wealth is health. Problems begin when the whole day is spent in the office, field and all those bullshits that your boss pins on you or the idiotic talks of your colleagues. Millions of people suffer from such things everyday in their work places and after the whole day they get tired and don't feel like spending some quality time with their families or with self. Believe me, there have been millions of relationship troubles due to the very fact that one gets tired and doesn't want to involve in gossips etc. So-called creativity gets diffused in the exhaustion.
Ever thought about living a healthy lifestyle, coming home from the office in an energetic manner, hopping around your home and enjoying with family or friends, going to market or park and walk for miles without even feeling a single pinch of fatigue ???
I remember, during my job at one of the finest newspapers in the world, I would find my seniors and colleagues sitting like a couch potato and gazing at their desktop screens. They would enter the office, put down their keys, bag and look around like someone who has won a world war and wants to sleep forever in a way like we see some slow motion videos on the TVs. They wondered what kept me so energetic and fast. Many were jealous, others would take tips.
Whereas, I would walk into my office feeling my exotic six-pack abs hidden under clothes. You know you can feel every muscle and enjoy it when you develop the same.
We had a smiley guy named Kalyaan g. He would always tell me that he felt empowered after shaking hands with me and would take some tips of workout. He would often meet me and tell that he woke up in the morning and went for a walk.
During my various interviews for the army, air force and Reliance securities I was asked to relax rather than sitting a straight posture. I would say, "This is the most relaxing position I am sitting at."
Workout is such a thing that can change your life forever. I started running, weightlifting and stretching during my high school and haven't left it since then. You know gaining the required weight and muscles with lots of strength feels great when people look at your straight body posture and your ripping muscles especially in your school/college or university.
It gives you confidence when you are stronger than others.
Getting up early morning and going for a jog or gym is one of the best things that can ever happen to anybody. Many of you might be helpless in waking up from your sticky bed and keep postponing your alarm every day I bet you. But fellas! we get up only in one alarm. Never set another one. If you can get up early morning, you will be mentally very strong.
Simple jogging around 2-5 kms everyday would suffice your health needs. After running we feel exhausted physically. But the fresh blood that runs in our body supplies lots of oxygen to our each and every part which is needed to the tissues. Our body also needs strength training to keep muscles healthy. Either some weightlifting or push ups/pull ups are some simple and fine exercises.
Try in sets. Like 10-12 repetitions in one set. Take a break of about one or two minutes then start again with full discipline.
Strict discipline is essential for health. Don't sympathize with your body. Be its master.
Remember! Commandos are made not born.
If you can, then go to a good gym. I know it might look difficult to continue after a week. More than 90 per cent of people fail to continue. Excuses: partner didn't wake up, will go tomorrow (which never comes), feel like sleeping more today etc and there is no returning back to gym for days or months or that time never comes. Mate, this isn't a dream but life, so I suggest you take it that way.
Eating healthy is equally important as working out. A good and healthy diet contributes 50 per cent in keeping our self fit. Decrease your intake of trans fats like fried stuff, ice-creams, say no to junk foods.
Salad, fruits, meat, eggs, rice, wheat and milk is more than sufficient if taken in the right quantity.
I remember our great graphic designer once asked me about the cost of dumbbells. I told him the price and the shops from where he could buy other exercise stuff also. But I told him that continuing such a thing and maintaining the routine was one of the tasks he would face. He wondered if that concept existed. He bought the stuff, started dumbbell press and in a week or so, he got married. Yes, he had left his dream of gaining those pumping iron muscles.
My one of the closest friends has his own way of getting early in the morning. For the past 7 good years, he has been setting up alarm to wake up at 5 and plan to go to gym. Once, he even revealed that he was setting up 5-7 alarms every night and finally, he leaves his bed at 10 am. But the guy does some good workout after dinner at 10 pm, hats off.
As I said, that second alarm never comes. Once we get up at some time, our body sets its own biological clock and we start getting up at the same time.
After a recent nice movie "Bhaag Milkha bhaag" directed on the life of Milkha Singh, I saw many youngsters started running-some alone and others in groups. But their routine lasted till the movie curtained from the cinemas.
During my college days, I never missed even a single day without running or weightlifting. Be it fog, rain, hail storm, I would always be there on the ground. Even during some festivals I would never find anybody in the whole park but my dedication to run one more round and then push ups and chin ups. It felt great when the whole body would be hot enough to think any tension of the world.
After I joined the newspaper job, my Editor-in-Chief told me that I would never see my evenings during my job, I knew it and accepted the offer letter.
I knew how I could maintain my routine during my 6 pm to 12 onwards midnight shift. Coming home around 1 am, and sleeping late, and getting up early mornings, my sleep cycle got disturbed. My immune system started collapsing and I would fall sick every couple of months. I started putting on fat around my exotic 6-pack abs and sides. I suffered acute sinusitis, fatigue and at times, I would go thoughtless or dumb I must confess. I realised, work makes you dumb enough to think something beyond it.
During my MA English days without any gym.
Only anti-gravity exercises without any supplement.
It was summer. Heat waves were all around and my colleagues kept grumbling even in those ACs at the office. I told myself that no, I would never give up, I shouldn't, I can't, I don't have that thing of surrendering before the circumstances. People take my suggestions and I had failed to continue my own workout plan and that at the of 28! No, this was never acceptable to me.
Due to some obligations, I had failed to pick some quality time for my workout and had only afternoon time. "So what," I told myself. I wore my shorts and shoes and ran the run of my life, breaking all those bondage in my mind, remembering my college days. I continued the same routine that summer and later, I started adjusting my workout but never gave up.

When my morality surrendered before fear. A small incident that took place during one of my motorcycle expeditions...

When fear got the better of us
My morality surrendered before fear
or
That Jackie Chan we ‘cheated’
My feet were almost freezing to numbness after crossing the waist-level deep cold water. We had ridden all the way through Baralacha la, a pass on our way to Ladakh. This pass is known to be covered with snow throughout the year. Our six-man team on four bikes was joined by a man from Ladakh who rode from Delhi. He was alone but courageous for he was travelling through such a terrain where not even mobile phones work. We wished him as the fellow bikers do to even strangers while on expedition. Together we took tea at a road side tent. After crossing the most rough weather pass, a little challenge of crossing a damaged road, with almost three-foot deep potholes covered with ice cold water, was waiting for us.
There were many vehicles that had to be crossed one by one. Since we were on mobikes, we made our way through the edge of the road in fear of falling in that biting cold water which could lead to hypothermia as well. After crossing it, to our dismay, we found that our fellow Ladakhi’s bike had punctured.
All of us stopped to help him. In such a freezing temperature the Ladakhi took out his toolkit, and with his strong hands unbolted the nut-bolts and pulled out the wheel of his Enfield motorcycle. After fixing the new tube in it, he started pumping air into it. As he did so, my two friends were busy clicking photos of the natural scenery that had taken us more than two days to reach. Not even a single green patch was visible all around. Huge peaks, covered with snow or half melted had added to the beauty.
Meanwhile, we came to know that the air pump wasn’t working, so we used another pump that we had. But as things went, the second pump did not work too. We struggled for an hour or so, but without success. Something was wrong either with the pumps or with the new tube. I could see the eyes of the Ladakhi man who seemed to be blessing us. His weather-beaten and wrinkled face reminded me the disarming smile of Jackie Chan.
All of a sudden, one of our friends spotted a jeep about one hundred metres away that was not moving. Our chubby mate alerted us of some mischief. He suspected the Ladakhi was setting us up and the puncture thing was just a drama to rob us. That suspicion created a different image of the guy ‘in distress’ who kept thanking us while struggling with his wheel. One by one, we came to conclusion to leave the place as we were afraid of being robbed by the man and the jeep which seemed a threat to us. After forming an opinion quickly, we got ready, ignited our bikes and left our Jackie Chan all alone in that mountainous region where freezing water from the glaciers was flowing on the roads that had washed away.
Silence was deafening. While riding, I kept thinking if that Jackie Chan was innocent then we had committed a moral sin by leaving him at the mercy of that hostile jeep or on those travellers who hardly pass through such places at such a time. We reached Sarchu before the sunset and put up at a temporarily built roadside inn. Our legs up to knee had gone numb due to riding through scratching cold water and we asked the inn keeper for boiling water to dip our legs into. After that I went for a stroll outside where around a dozen more tourists, truck drivers had been staying. I could see a big chunk of vast plain land ahead of me. I spotted small dust whirlpool following some motorbike. As it neared, I could see that that our Jackie Chan was riding and he had made it. He reached the inn and smiled at me. I asked him how he fixed his tyre. He replied, a passer-by car driver helped him with his air pump. He seemed happy to see me and cracked some jokes. He also told me about his two sons studying in the USA and how he funded them.
None of my team mates spoke anything but instead changed the topic. The Ladhaki even offered me some boiled sheep meat. Then I went to my lodgings, ate dinner and six of we slept on a double bed.
I kept thinking for long that had Jackie Chan not been helped, what he would have done. Thanks to that passerby, who let me sleep without any worries for the Enfield man had been safe.
Perhaps morality was not strong enough against the unseen and unreasonable fear.

Kindly go through the photos below which may take your breath away.
