How to speak English well? How to speak English like a native speaker. What are the problems in learning English?

How to speak English well? What is real English?

M. NASSER GORSI,
Linguistics expert and ESL lecturer

The hegemony of the English language has grown up so much that it has become a global language. Those countries where England had its colonies, left the language as a legacy after independence. Languages came into existence first, grammatical rules were created scientifically later on in order to teach and understand.
I believe, that one can succeed even if you don't have much knowledge about his/her subject, but provided that you know English well.
People in many countries like India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, middle east countries, etc. believe that English is the language of gentlemen and ladies. So, in the society, they manage to grab good respect.
I would like to classify English into two categories broadly:
1. Prescriptive English: This English is the actual language that is prescribed and is considered to be pure.
2. Descriptive English: It is the English that we manipulate according to our own mother tongue or you can say due to the mother tongue influence (MTI).

Never study grammar in depth.

When I was in school, I had always a bent towards languages. I always liked the Russians speaking Russian, Spanish by  Spanish and French by French people.
Somehow, I started teaching English as a second language when I was in the college. Then after three years of teaching, I came across some books and changed my strategy of teaching with the passage of time.
During my MA in English, in 2007, I studied linguistics, which helped me study the language scientifically and my love for languages grew more.
In 2008, the next year, I joined a one-year course in French language. Fortunately, I realised that 60-70% of the English language has been derived from French. My passion for teaching kept growing and I had increased my batches, earned good money, paid college expenses and had bought a lovely jet black cruiser motorbike.
One day, one of my students told me to teach him basic tenses. I postponed the topic for the next day as I had to prepare for myself first. It occurred to me that I had forgotten almost all the tenses. But I never forgot English. It was probably once you learn the language by heart (unconsciously), you don't need to take care of grammatical rules. So,thereafter, I studied the grammar deeply to teach and realised that I had forgotten many rules.
I taught hundreds of students. All of them wanted a magic wand and learn speaking English like an English speaker in one day. Believe me fellas, Rome was not built in one day. If you are born, you don't start speaking the next day, you take two to three years to learn the language.

Golden Tips that I involve in teaching English.

1. Start reading a good newspaper for two-three hours every day. Every day means every day. This will teach you grammar unconsciously.
2. Write  at least 10 pages of a notebook. This will not only improve your spellings, but will also improve your handwriting and some understanding of the language.

The level of our confidence keeps rising and diving. Sometimes, if you are in high spirits, you speak it boldly with confidence. At times, if the other person you are talking to, speaks fluently, you may lose confidence in yourself and get depressed. It happens, almost with every body.
There are people who speak fluently but do not know proper grammar even and there are some who write very well but can't speak. This is due to lack of practice and exposure.
Yes, exposure plays a vital role in speaking English. Ever wondered why do most Indians (any native of any country other than English) living in the English-speaking countries speak like English speakers? Yes, it is called exposure. Speaking and listening, both. Children who are brought up in the English-speaking countries speak just like any other English native. It is because they are the native, get 100 per cent exposure since their childhood.
What is Language Acquisition Device?
I am of the opinion that one can learn any language during his/her childhood because according to the Linguistics, there is something called LAD (Language Acquisition Device) in our brain. In the childhood, it is always easy to learn the languages because our LAD is empty and gets hold over the new things fast. As we grow, our use of the language, subjects starts limiting and we stop learning or learn at a slow pace after sometime. I know a few guys who were learning French language in my Panjab University class. They were in their early 60s and were retired from jobs. One of them had retired as a doctor, another one had retired from the education department. The doctor was very good a good learner. It is probably due to his hard work at home or he kept learning his whole life. On the other side, the other man, who had a Doctorate in Physics, told me in his Punjabi, "Zaar Nasser, mere ko ek baat samjh ni atti, man ghr mein bot meint karta hun, sali samjh ni atti French." (Dear Nasser, I don't understand one thing, I work hard on my French at home but can't understand it.)
Not everybody is same. There are many kinds of learners. Like some are new to a language and others know the basics like spellings, some pronunciation and can understand to some extent. The Golden Tips that I have mentioned above are beneficial for both. If you follow this schedule with full dedication and honesty for at least three months, I promise you that your language will drastically improve.
Many a time, there are people who know English but they cannot answer questions in IELTS. Reason, lack of confidence and knowledge. You must know about the topic to be spoken in order to speak.
In journalism, there is a common saying, "READ TO WRITE". I always cite this example to my students and tell them to read as much as they can. This also improves their knowledge and they can speak on the issues they have read about.
Apart from that you can buy a grammar book and work on a few exercises every day to learn the rules.
I have been teaching English as a private tutor since 2003. I also worked as an ESL (English as a second language) lecturer at Chitkara University of Engineering and Technology, Baddi, Himachal Pradesh, India.
I had opened up an institute of English academy but due to some financial problems, my dream project had to be closed.
My passion for learning and teaching English has never stopped. Right now, I have been working as a Sub-Editor in The Tribune (English daily newspaper), for more than three years. But I still teach the whole day since morning for three reasons:
1.My newspaper job starts at 6 pm in the evening and I have the whole day.
2. Passion
3. Money

Analytical Writing

How to use HOWEVER. Where to use However. Different usages of however.

Mohd Nasser Gorsi,
Linguistic Expert and ESL lecturer
We use the words like however, nevertheless, consequently, etc. to beautify our literary texts. I believe, it is important to know such words. I have tried to explain some usages:

A) We can use however with adjectives or adverbs to mean 'to what degree'
For example: 1. He wanted to buy all shares, however costly.
2. She has the doors open, however cold it is outside.
3. However carefully the teacher explained, students did not understand.
When ever is used to emphasise how, the meaning 'in what way or manner', it is written as a separate word.
For example: How ever did you earn so much quickly?
B) Use in whatever way:
For example: 1. However you please her, she will never agree.
C) You can use it to introduce a statement that contrasts with something that has just been said:
For example: 1. She was angry. She talked to him, however, and tried to be calm.
2. We thought the car was in good condition. However, we have now discovered some problems.

How to score 9 bands in IELTS writing module. Golden tips for scoring 9 bands in IELTS writing module.

Have you ever thought about why you can not score more in the IELTS writing module in spite of taking coaching from institutes. Are you the one who is new to IELTS and wants to score well with proper guidance?
If yes, then you are at the right blog. I have been teaching IELTS for six years. Very often, many students have asked me how could they score more in the writing module. Many candidates are confronted with the problem in reading graphs, pie charts, etc.
Now, I hope that your search is over. Please read the instructions written here and bring laurels.

1. Write an overview: This should include a summary
of the information and date from the graph/chart and usually comes in the conclusion.
2. Focus on the key features of the graph/charge.
3. Notice overall trends: The population might be fluctuating but over the span of the whole period they rise/fall/remain stable.
4. Use data/numbers to support your description: This means that every statement about the graph (e.g. the population has risen significantly) needs to be supported by figures (e.g. the population has risen significantly by about 50 %).
5. Use passive voice when required: The electricity is produced in three stages.
6. Divide the work logically into paragraphs: Introduction, main body (normally two paragraphs) and then conclusion.
7. Paraphrase the instructions: Your introduction should, well introduce the graph/chart. Not good to copy the task. Make sure you paraphrase it.
8. Write at least minimum 150 words: It might sound stupid but it is very important. You lose points on the TA for under-length.
9. Use linking to signal contrast/addition, etc.
M Nasser Gorsi, Linguistics Expert, ESL lecturer
10. Brainstorm synonyms and avoid word repetition.
11. Minimise simple errors and check the task after writing.

Please write a comment and share if you like it.

What is TOEFL? All about TOEFL

TOEFL
Training of English foreign language, we all have different queries; we all possess some question in our mind that what is TOEFL all about. Well friends, I have something to tell you, which I think would clear all your doubts.
First of all, let us get familiar with the word TOEFL. Basically, it's an English test for English native speakers, just to check their command over your language and to diagnose their thinking level. The test also has an Internet-based version (iBT), which is conducted by the Educational Testing System (ETS). Moreover, they have their official website as www.ets.org.com. On this official site, we can take the suitable date for test.

Why people have to take TOEFL?

This is one of the most often sought questions been asked by the students. As we all know, people who all plan to go to abroad for studying in good universities that rank among the top world ranking, ask for this test as mandatory for people who like to take admission in their university or college for post-graduation or other higher programmes. So, the ETS has conducted this test to fulfil the requirements. In addition, whatever the score we get out of the total, that can directly be sent to the university for further admission process and the result is declared after ten to twelve days from the date of the test.
Now, let us talk about the diversification of the test. There are four sections that calibrate equal numbers. Each section consists of thirty marks. So, the total number of marks for four sections are 120. The test lasts for about four to five hours. After each section, there is a one-minute break and after completing two sections there is a ten-minute break to relax and after that the test continues with further instructions given by the examiner.
Furthermore, no section is related to the other. So, there is no need to get confused. Therefore, one can focus on the test with each individual section.
There are four sections starting in order with Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. Remember! there is no negative marking for any wrong answer.
As mentioned above each section is of equal marks that is thirty, the reading section contains comprehensions questions taken from newspapers, magazines and they could be even taken from academic books also related to science, history, etc. For answering these sets of questions, students get 60 minutes to read all the passage and answer the questions about the passages and in order to do well in this section, they even have to study ample of material in order to score good in reading section.
Then, we have the Listening section. This part will check your ability to understand the conversation and lectures in English. But keep in mind that you will hear the lecture only once. After each lecture, you have to answer the questions about it regarding the main idea and supporting details. In this section, the candidates can even jot down some key points if they want to. To answer the questions, you will get only 20 minutes.

After a 10-minute break, we have the Speaking section, which actually assesses your ability to communicate or how you can represent the information given orally. In this module, there are six sections in which two are independent tasks which are related to familiar topic like hobbies, personal preferences or choice task. You get 15 seconds to prepare and 45 seconds to speak, the voice is recorded when the time starts on the computer screen after a beep.
Similarly, we have integrated task in this section, in which the different task are given and for that we have 45 seconds to read a short passage and after that we get 30 seconds to prepare and 60 seconds to answer the questions. In this task, the candidate is asked to summarize the speaker’s opinion about the issue.
Lastly, we have Writing section that checks the writing skills of the student. This part consists of two sections. First one is the integrated task. It is the task which has a combination of academic reading passage and listening. For this, we will first have readings part and are be given two minutes note-making and write down the important information then, we will hear the recording related to the passage and we have to summarize the information and make a passage of 150 to 225 words in 20 minutes.
On the other hand, after the integrated task, we have independent task in which we have to support the point of view on a particular topic, and for this, the students are given 30 minutes to answer the question and the word limit is at least 300 words.
This is how all the sections are answered and to get good marks, one needs to do good homework that is have to study and do hard work.

In my view, I think those who do regularly read newspapers, books, good magazines and practice speaking in English logically, will hardly face any problem in all the four sections of TOEFL.
In my personal experience, I would say if you want to fulfil your dreams and want to take admission in some world's top university, better start working now and achieve your target.

References- you can even order them online.

Here are some books which have good sample questions and will actually help you to improve your score.

How and where to use hyphen. Do you know how to use Hyphen? Are you putting it right?

M. Nasser Gorsi, ESL lecturer, Linguistics expert

Hyphen (-) is a kind of punctuation mark that is used to join two words. Its usage is called hyphenation. Please don't confuse it with longer dash or minus. I have tried to explain
its use in the following rules:
1. We use hyphen between two words when they come before a noun to modify it.
For example: an off-line website, state-of-the art weapons, back-up plan, etc.
2. We also use hyphen to mention a new, original, unusual compound nouns to avoid confusion.
For example: 1. Video-grapher, Sub-Editor, Sub-Divisional, etc.
3. Do not use hyphen for adverb very and adverbs ending in -ly.
For example: 1. very-good person, 2. Finely-tuned person. (Both are incorrect)
But we can say friendly-looking cat or family-oriented person.
4. We can use hyphen while mentioning somebody's age.
For example: 1. a two-year-old child, 2. a 30-year-old man. We use hyphen and they are used in singular. Please do not write plural form of noun after hyphen since we use a before it. We can also mention age without using hyphen like 40 years old man, three years old child, etc.
5. You may use hyphen if you feel that it solves your problem.
For example: We have a few more-important plans to work on.
6. We can hyphenate all compound numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine.
For example: 1. Forty-two students, 2. Two thousand three hundred.
I work as a Sub-Editor in a newspaper. I suggest you kindly read a good-edited newspaper and underline hyphenated words for a few days for your calibration.
I hope, I have been successful in clearing some doubts and teaching a few new things.

How to join a gym? Do you run short of time? golden tips to build muscles, tone your body. Leg workout

Are you the one who often waits for an ideal time to join a gym? Are you the one who keeps on postponing your workout routine excusing the time management or health issues?
Remember! The best word in the world is action and every time is right time for action.
To do anything we do not require excuses. But if we are not willing, we have hundreds of them.
First of all, I won't recommend you to join a gym all of a sudden without doing R&D. I believe, one should go to ground and start jogging and increase your running speed gradually for a month or so.
Ground exercises are somewhat different from that of a gym. Because if you start working out abruptly, your body may not be fully prepared to lift weights.
Many people, including trainers, will tell you that they will prepare your diet chart, workout schedule etc, once you enroll with the gym. But many a time, you do not get personal attention after paying.
No one gives a damn about you.
It's your body and you have to understand it.

In this article, I will give you golden advices about how to build muscles, tone your body and plan a good diet.
First of all, a balanced diet never remains the same. You have to keep changing it depending upon your workout. Whenever you are going for more of cardio training, use more carbohydrates, fat, protein and salad. Proper vitamins and minerals are very important for our body. But the problem is that despite knowing some of these facts, we hardly implement them in our daily lives.

You can use also buy some gym pants, shoes, and bag to have a feel of workout. Some supplements may help your body gain some muscles and mass. If you have somebody really a genuine person to guide you then it's ok, else, you can always buy some good quality Whey Protein online especially of 'ON'. My sources tell me that ON proteins are somewhat safe. There are some people who make their supplements own by own and also sell it to others. You never know what they put inside them.
I have tried some branded supplements online from www.healthkart.com, www, snapdeal, com, etc. and they worked pretty well. The best one I ever had was that of CARNIVORE. Though it is said that it has been banned yet I got it from a local seller and then online.

I met one of the hardcore bodybuilders today at my gym. He would workout aggressively. He, smilingly, asked me for some support for his biceps workout. I went to him and forced him to go for more and more while he was exhausted. But he appreciated and said, only a sportsman can motivate in such a way. I told him I was a wrestler earlier. We chatted for a while and came to know that we had many good friends (most of them bodybuilders) in common.
While talking, I, all of a sudden, asked him to go for another set. He started and then another. I forced him to go for extremes. He, while pulling the bar, with his full strength, shouted, it (his biceps) will tear out. I shouted back at him and said, let it be but finish five more then five more! And then the hulky guy was all exhausted. But believe me, these extremities are required to reach the competition state.
My problem with the workout is shortage of time. I teach at my small English academy for the whole day and then around 4 pm I go to gym. I observe that most of the bodybuilding aspirants, jog for sometime on treadmills, cross trainers, then start weight training. Even girls and women go for weight training despite their requirements of a toned body.
Coming in tight outfits, butting your ass out doesn't fetch you a fit body. You have to work for it babes.
You have to understand your physiology. Start with some warm up and then go for stretching exercises every day. Then you see what part you want to do.
If you are looking forward to looking masculine, then go for weight training, if you want feminine body, then go for Yoga, light-weight exercises, toning, etc.
If you want beautiful legs, then follow the picture above shown picture with discipline.
Many of us want a beautiful body without sweating and believe in those TV ads. Fellas! Give me a break, have a kit kat. There are no short cuts.
Golden rules for gaining muscles:
1. Do warm up exercises before workout, especially, of the body part you wan to work for.
2. Gradually increase the weights
3. Stretch your muscles and feel the weights while lifting. (Remember! more the stretch, more the muscle and less injury).
4. Go beyond the limits but don't be crazy.
5. One body part on each day. Like chest means only chest workout, nothing else.
6. Eat more protein-rich diets at regular intervals and keep your body hydrated.
7. Take proper rest
8. Regular massage every week is essential for blood flow.

Do you forget things easily? Here is a remedy.

Ever wonder why do you forget things easily?

My work shift was to start at 7 in the evening. I went to gym for I had been planning for quite sometime. After workout, I went to a nearby shop to buy an energy drink. I asked the shopkeeper, an old man, for a Gatorade. In the meantime, a guy came running and breathing hard. He pleadingly told the old man that he had forgotten to pay him for soya milk some minutes ago. I recalled one of my friends telling me that once he left home on a motorbike. He felt the striking air, his hair and had a great experience of riding as he had never felt before. At a light point, he saw his face in the bike mirror and ran his fingers through his hair. Suddenly, he realised that he had forgotten to wear a helmet. I wonder why are people, sometimes, so careless or tend to forget things. Perhaps, a day’s hard work and poor attention to one’s self is the cause. Sometimes, the very thing people are looking for is just before them but they fail to notice it. Probably, their unconscious mind is preoccupied in many other thoughts. I know a friend who not only remembers 18 different houses in various locations across the city, but also the timing to reach there. He always remembers when he has to mow his lawn, date girls, etc. His claim of being the most attentive man in the world seems to fall flat when he forgets about the stuff he keeps in his room. Then he asks his mother, “Had you been my pen, where could I have kept you?” He even asked me if I had been his bike key, where would I be lying. Once a hundred-rupee note he was looking for, was found atop a car parked outside his home. “Probably, I might have been talking on the phone and put it there absentmindedly,” he made a hurried excuse. I wonder if we, humans, have made our lives so complex that we often forget many things. A guy, who bought an examination form from the university for an improvement exam one month prior to the closing date, filled it on the last date. Of course, he had forgotten the very form for which he had waited for one long year.
My mother does not remember to take her medicines on time. She even asks me to buy her regular medicines at the eleventh hour instead of informing me two or thee days before. During my stint as a teacher in a university, I vividly recall my students forgetting their books, to prepare for the tests but never their mobile phones. I remember a girl whose boy friend forgot to wish on her birthday and the day went terribly wrong for she fought with him. Many a time, we ask the other person to repeat what he or she had spoken. Logically, we do understand it at once, but either out of habit or sheer carelessness we need repetition. It was half past six in the evening.
I was getting late and was still waiting for my energy drink. I had been waiting for at least five minutes but my drink had not been given to me. I told the man on the counter, “No problem, I can wait till tomorrow morning for my drink.” The man remarked, “Sir, your drink is in front of you. It’s up to you if you want to wait till next morning.”

How to speak English well? Do you want to speak English? What are the basic problems faced by an English learner. Golden tips to learn and speak English. What is real English?

2. Passion
3. Money
